Summary
AMD is making significant strides in the AI landscape with its latest acquisition of Finnish AI startup Silo AI for approximately $665 million.
This acquisition, expected to close by the end of the year, follows AMD's series of strategic moves to bolster its AI capabilities.
Silo AI, a private AI lab with four offices in Europe and a workforce of over 300, including 125 PhD-level AI scientists, specializes in areas such as computer vision, large language models (LLMs), and machine learning. Peter Sarlin, CEO and co-founder of Silo AI, will continue to lead the company and report to AMD's Senior Vice President Vamsi Boppana.
Boppana highlighted that this acquisition would enable AMD to unlock significant business opportunities. Silo AI has already developed LLMs using AMD's technology and will continue to create new AI models and products post-acquisition. Notably, last year, Silo released Poro, an open-source LLM proficient in Finnish, English, Python, and Java. This year, they introduced Viking, an LLM designed for Nordic languages.
Pekka Manninen, director of science and technology at Finland's CSC-IT Center for Science, praised Silo AI for its pioneering work in scaling large language model training on LUMI, Europe’s fastest supercomputer, powered by over 12,000 AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs.
This acquisition significantly boosts AMD's AI investment, following last year's $125 million spend and the acquisition of two other AI firms, Mipsology and Nod.AI. AMD’s competitors, including Nvidia, Apple, and Intel, are also making substantial AI investments. Recently, Nvidia acquired Israeli AI firms Deci and Run
for a combined $1 billion, while Apple purchased Canadian startup DarwinAI earlier this year.
