Apple has officially added support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in its Messages app with the release of the second developer beta of iOS 18. This update allows iPhone users to send and receive files, high-quality images, view typing indicators, obtain read receipts, and engage in group chats via the internet, enhancing communication with users of non-Apple devices, primarily Android phones.
Prior to this update, iPhone users could only utilize SMS or MMS for communication with non-Apple devices, limiting the ability to share media and use advanced messaging features outside of iMessage. With the new RCS integration, iPhone users can now enjoy a more seamless messaging experience with anyone whose device supports RCS, although messages from Android devices will still appear as green bubbles in iMessage.
Currently, RCS support is restricted to U.S. carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. The feature will be functional only if users have installed the iOS 18 developer beta and their carrier supports RCS with an updated network bundle for iOS 18.
Apple had hinted at this update during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote earlier this month.
Apple stated, “When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS,” in its press release about iOS 18.
Both iPhone and Android users have long anticipated this update, as it simplifies messaging and file sharing across different devices. Google has also been advocating for Apple to adopt RCS, aiming to bridge the gap between iMessage's blue and green bubbles.
