Summary

AST SpaceMobile has successfully launched its BlueBird satellites, marking a significant step towards creating a space-based mobile communications network.

This network aims to transform any standard smartphone into a satellite phone without the need for additional hardware. The launch, which took place on September 12, saw five commercial satellites enter low-Earth orbit.

BlueBird Satellite Network

The BlueBird satellites are equipped with advanced communication arrays designed to provide standard smartphones with voice, data, and video speeds comparable to those of a broadband tower. Once operational, these satellites will offer "non-continuous cellular broadband service" across the United States and select global markets. This technology will enable unmodified mobile phones to function as satellite phones, offering connectivity in areas with limited broadband coverage, such as rural regions and national parks.

Initial Focus and Partnerships

Initially, the BlueBird network will cater to beta test customers from AT&T and Verizon. AST SpaceMobile secured a deal with AT&T in May to provide satellite communication services to its customers. The company achieved its first successful two-way voice call over its satellites in April 2023, followed by a successful 4G data download test in June 2023.
