Summary

GitHub, the widely-used code repository and developer platform, has resolved significant issues that disrupted its services on Wednesday. The company identified and rolled back changes to its database infrastructure, which were the root cause of the problems. As of 8:26 PM ET, GitHub announced that all services are now "fully operational."

Earlier in the day, users attempting to access the main GitHub website encountered an error message stating, "no server is currently available to service your request," accompanied by an image of an angry unicorn. The outage affected various GitHub services, including pull requests, GitHub Pages, Copilot, and the GitHub API.

The situation escalated quickly, with GitHub's first status message appearing at 7:11 PM ET. Shortly after, the company reported issues across multiple services. The outage was widespread, with Downdetector receiving over 10,000 user reports of problems. At 7:13 PM, internet monitoring service NetBlocks confirmed that GitHub was experiencing international outages.

GitHub, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, has since restored its services and assured users that the platform is now stable.
