Google is introducing a new feature called "Collections" to keep Android users engaged with their apps directly from the home screen. This initiative, first hinted at during the Google I/O developer conference, aims to promote Android apps beyond the Play Store.
At Google I/O, developers were introduced to tools designed to re-engage users with apps already installed on their devices. While the focus was initially on the software development kit (SDK) available to developers, the specifics of the new feature were not fully disclosed.
Google has now revealed that over 35 developer partners, including Spotify, Pinterest, Tumblr, TikTok, and Shopify, are testing "Collections." This feature, discovered through an APK teardown by Android Authority, was previously referred to as "Cubes." It introduces a Play Store-powered widget on the Android home screen that organizes app updates into categories such as Watch, Listen, Read, Games, Social, and Shop. Users can tap on these categories to access relevant content from their apps, assuming the apps have integrated with the SDK.
During the Google I/O session, the Engage SDK was presented as an invite-only tool aimed at showcasing content, promotions, and deals to bring users back into their apps. The new on-device surface will automatically organize the most relevant content, inviting users to engage with their apps seamlessly. For instance, retail apps can highlight items saved in the cart, Uber Eats can prompt users to reorder favorite meals, Reddit can suggest interesting posts to read and upvote, and Spotify can feature favorite playlists.
