Summary

Google's latest foldable phone, powered by their Gemini AI, is being hailed as an "epic display of Google AI" and "unfoldgettable." The Android Authority blog describes the phone as "impressive" and "incredibly thin," though it comes with a hefty price tag of $1,800.

However, the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, known for its thorough device testing, has raised some concerns. According to 9to5Google, the video highlights several issues:

•  The hinge grinds when exposed to dirt and sand due to a lack of dust protection.

•  While the Pixel 9 Pro Fold passes a closed bend test, it shows weaknesses when bent open from the back. The hinge lacks significant resistance despite the back panels covering it.

•  The placement of an antenna line at a weak point in the frame is criticized, likened to "putting an exhaust port in the Death Star."

On a positive note, JerryRigEverything praises Google for using recycled aluminum for the phone's metal frame and appreciates the phone's design and feel. The inner display, however, is made from a soft, flexible plastic that scratches easily, even with fingernails. This is typical for foldable phones, and users are advised to keep the screen clean to avoid damage.

iFixit also provides insights, noting that over half of the phone's internal space is taken up by lithium polymer battery cells. Their teardown video highlights the phone's delicate inner screens and potential issues with dust and liquid ingress due to the hinge mechanism. Despite these concerns, iFixit commends Google's efforts to support repairability, offering repair guides, a detailed Bill of Materials, and readily available spare parts.

One major criticism from iFixit is the battery removal tabs, which are flimsy and often break, making battery replacement challenging. Despite this, the overall repairability of the device is seen as a significant improvement.

A colleague, a long-time iPhone user, expressed interest in switching to Android after seeing the Pixel 9 Fold. The focus on repairability is appreciated by both device owners and technicians, and it will be interesting to see how manufacturers continue to innovate in this area.
