Amazon has unveiled its latest advancement in artificial intelligence: Rufus, a beta-stage AI shopping assistant designed to enhance the online shopping experience.
Rufus is described as a “generative AI-powered expert shopping assistant,” utilizing Amazon’s extensive product catalog, customer reviews, community questions, and other web data to provide informed product recommendations.
Amazon CEO Ted Jassy announced the launch on X (formerly Twitter) on February 2nd.
Ever notice it’s hard to get great answers on shopping journey questions? And, to get good answers where they’re deeply integrated into a shopping experience you love and trust?

Rufus excels in guiding customers through their shopping journey by answering specific questions, such as what to consider when buying headphones, and offering recommendations based on activities or occasions. For example, if you’re starting golf, Rufus might suggest categories like golf clubs and apparel. If you’re searching for a gift, you can ask for the best Valentine’s gift ideas.
Once a product is selected, Rufus assists with targeted questions about that product, like whether specific golf clubs are suitable for beginners. Additionally, Rufus helps compare and contrast different items, such as lip gloss versus lip oil.
Rufus generates these answers by sifting through Amazon’s extensive data and other relevant web information. Currently, the beta version is available to select customers. Users can interact with Rufus by typing questions into the Amazon search bar, which then opens a dialogue box for further queries.
According to Amazon, Rufus “significantly enhances how easy it is for customers to find and discover the best products to meet their needs, seamlessly integrated into the familiar Amazon shopping experience.”
The full rollout of Rufus is expected in the coming weeks.
Jassy commented, “This is an exciting next step in the Amazon shopping experience, and I look forward to seeing how it helps customers make better, more informed shopping decisions.”
