Meta's latest social media venture, Threads, has officially crossed the 200 million active user mark, as confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri. This announcement came shortly after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at this milestone during the company's Q2 2024 earnings call.
Mosseri shared the achievement in a post on Threads, stating, "I’m excited to share that we crossed the 200M milestone on @threads. My hope is that Threads can inspire ideas that bring people together and this amazing community continues to grow."
Launched in July 2023, Threads has shown impressive growth. The platform reached 150 million users in April 2024, hit 175 million in July on its one-year anniversary, and quickly surged to 200 million by August.
Threads was developed as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter), which had over 600 million monthly users as of May 2024, according to owner Elon Musk. The launch of Threads was partly driven by the dissatisfaction of long-time Twitter users due to Musk's management changes.
Mark Zuckerberg has high hopes for Threads, predicting it could eventually surpass a billion users. On the latest earnings call, he expressed satisfaction with the platform's growth, noting, "We’re making steady progress towards building what looks like it’s going to be another major social app. And we are seeing deeper engagement." Zuckerberg also mentioned ongoing efforts to improve Threads' content recommendation system.
