Summary

Microsoft has unveiled a new unified Teams application designed to streamline the experience for users across personal, work, and educational accounts. This update allows Windows and Mac users to effortlessly toggle between different account types without the hassle of installing multiple apps.

One of the key features of the new Microsoft Teams app is the ability to switch accounts seamlessly without the need to sign out and back in. Additionally, users can join meetings without having to log into an account, further simplifying the user experience.

Amit Fulay, Microsoft’s VP of Product, explained, “We are excited to announce that the unified Microsoft Teams experience is now available on Windows 10 and 11. By signing in with a personal email address or phone number, users can connect and collaborate with anyone, anytime — all for free. You can even join as a guest without signing in. Whether you’re connecting with a customer or discussing your school’s next fundraiser, simply select your preferred account when joining the meeting.”

The updated Teams app is available for all users and can be downloaded from Microsoft's website. Existing desktop installations will automatically update to the new version. Initially announced in March, this unified app provides a single interface for all account types on both Windows and macOS. A preview version was previously made available to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels, featuring Teams version 24057.2000.2723.3544 or higher. This version was also automatically deployed on fresh installs of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26080 and beyond.

According to the Windows Insider team, “Microsoft Teams will now be available as a single application, allowing users to seamlessly switch between multiple cloud environments, tenants, and account types, whether for personal use or work.”

Microsoft has also enhanced the app’s notification system, making it easier to identify which account notifications pertain to, and updated personal notification banners to include more detailed information.

In line with the app's unification, Microsoft has simplified the naming scheme, dropping the "Microsoft Teams (work or school)" label in favor of simply "Microsoft Teams." The previous standalone consumer app, “Microsoft Teams (free),” has also been incorporated into this streamlined version.
