Summary

Roblox has announced a cutting-edge generative AI tool that allows creators to build entire 3D environments with simple text prompts. The popular gaming platform is set to revolutionize its game development process by enabling developers to type commands like "Generate a racetrack in the desert," and the AI will instantly create the scene.

Additionally, users can alter these environments, such as shifting a desert landscape to a forest or changing the time of day, all within seconds.

While Roblox Studio already allows for manual scene creation, the new generative AI tool dramatically reduces development time, giving even novice creators the ability to generate sophisticated environments. According to Roblox, this tool is designed to help developers with minimal 3D art skills build more immersive worlds for their games. Though the release date for the tool hasn’t been set, excitement is growing within the developer community.

Marcus Holmström, CEO of The Gang—a top Roblox game development studio—said, "This will save so much time. Instead of manually building a mountain, you can generate multiple variations instantly and tweak them to fit your design."

Roblox’s AI works by “tokenizing” 3D blocks, analyzing how they fit into sequences similar to how language models predict words. However, building 3D environments poses unique challenges due to limited available 3D data. To tackle this, Roblox is leveraging user-generated data as well as external datasets.

One major hurdle has been ensuring the AI generates logical 3D environments. To solve this, Roblox is implementing a second AI model trained on 2D data to verify the consistency of the 3D outputs. This system helps catch potential issues, like a tree randomly appearing on a racetrack, by converting the 3D environment to 2D for a cross-check.

Although this tool simplifies the creation process, game designers will still need to fine-tune levels to ensure they are engaging and fun. “AI can generate the base, but you still need a human touch to ensure quality,” said Chris Totten, an associate professor in animation and game design.

As part of its ongoing AI integration, Roblox has over 250 AI models in operation, including ones that moderate real-time voice chats. Roblox also plans to open-source its 3D foundation model, encouraging developers to innovate further with their creations.
