Summary
Samsung, a global leader in memory and storage solutions, has unveiled its first 61.44TB SSD, marking a significant milestone in data storage technology.
Designed specifically for enterprise environments, this high-capacity SSD is not intended for general consumer use. The development is enabled by Samsung's innovative controller technology, which hints at the possibility of even larger 120TB SSDs in the future.
The new PM1743 SSD, leveraging Samsung's 176-layer 7th Generation V-NAND (3D NAND) QLC memory and a proprietary controller, delivers impressive performance metrics.
It boasts a sequential read speed of 7.2GBps and a sequential write speed of up to 2.0GBps, along with 1,600,000 random read and 110,000 random write IOPS. The drive offers an endurance of 0.26 drive writes per day (DWPD) over a five-year period.
Previously, Samsung's SSD offerings maxed out at 32TB. However, the new 61.44TB variant of the PM1743 significantly expands this capacity, positioning it against other high-capacity SSDs like Solidigm’s D5-P5336 and Western Digital's 60TB class enterprise drives.
The PM1743 will be available in various form factors to accommodate different server configurations, including U.2 and PCIe 4.0 x4, as well as the E3.S form factor for PCIe 5.0 x4 interfaces, catering to high-storage-density environments. Pricing and power consumption details are yet to be announced, though similar high-capacity drives are priced around $7,000.
Samsung faces limited competition in this segment, with key rivals like Kioxia, Micron, and SK Hynix yet to introduce 60TB class SSDs. This new product solidifies Samsung's position as a leader in enterprise storage solutions.
