Summary

As Threads nears its first anniversary, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that the platform now boasts over 175 million monthly active users. This milestone comes just days before the app's one-year mark on July 3. Back in April, Zuckerberg reported 150 million monthly users, a significant increase from 130 million in February.

Launched on July 3, 2023, Threads emerged as a popular alternative to X (formerly Twitter) after Elon Musk’s controversial changes to the social network. The latest user metrics come in the wake of Musk's claim that X now has 600 million monthly active users, with half of them being daily users. However, Musk did not specify if this figure includes automated accounts or spam bots.

In conjunction with the user milestone, Meta shared insights into how people engage with Threads. According to Meta, text content dominates the platform, with 63% of posts being text-only. Nonetheless, visual content remains significant, with one in four posts featuring at least one image. Additionally, over 50 million Tags have been created, with popular tags including PhotographyThreads, BookThreads, and GymThreads.

While the number of monthly active users provides a glimpse into Threads' performance, it does not fully capture the platform’s success. A key factor in Threads' growth is its integration and promotion within Instagram.

Since its debut, Threads has introduced several user-requested features, including a web app, trending topics, and an edit button. While Threads aims to offer an experience similar to X, it distinguishes itself by avoiding political discourse. Meta has stated that Threads will not amplify news, in contrast to X, which remains a go-to platform for live event discussions, such as presidential debates.
