Tinder has officially launched its new AI Photo Selector feature, designed to help users pick the best photos for their dating profiles. Initially tested last year, this Match-owned dating app's innovative feature is now available to all users in the U.S. and will be rolled out to international markets later this summer.
The AI Photo Selector employs facial detection technology to analyze and select the most appealing photos. Users can upload a selfie on Tinder, which the AI uses to create a unique facial geometry, enabling it to identify and pull up relevant photos from their camera roll. This technology is similar to the facial recognition features found in Google and Apple photo apps.
The feature then curates a selection of ten selfies that are likely to perform well on a user’s profile, based on Tinder’s insights into what makes an effective profile image. This includes factors like lighting and composition. Additionally, the AI discourages group photos to avoid confusion about whose profile it is.
The AI was trained on a diverse dataset to ensure it is inclusive and accurate, aligning with Tinder’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) standards. It also filters out photos that violate guidelines, such as inappropriate content.
The purpose of this new feature is to simplify the process of selecting the best selfies from a user’s gallery and to reduce the uncertainty of choosing the right photo. A recent Tinder survey revealed that 68% of participants found an AI photo selection feature helpful, and 52% struggled with selecting profile images.
Faye Iosotaluno, Tinder CEO, stated, “As hundreds of millions of people use AI daily, we are excited to leverage this technology to support our users in an area they find challenging. Our vision is to use AI to enable and enhance the dating journey, providing a safe space for authentic connections.”
Iosotaluno emphasized that the AI Photo Selector is meant to assist users in making decisions rather than making decisions for them. She added, “At Tinder, we use innovative technologies to create a safe space for people to make authentic connections.”
Parent company Match has been increasing its investment in generative AI. At a Reuters event last year, Tinder’s CPO, Mark Van Ryswyk, suggested the potential for users to use generative AI to write their dating bios. In August 2023, Mark Kantor, former head of growth at Zynga, was appointed as Tinder's vice president of innovation to lead a team of engineers focusing on generative AI solutions.
