As the Olympic Games conclude, attention shifts not only to the athletes but also to the transformative impact of technology on modern sports and training methods. Recent advancements such as wearable devices, performance analytics, and virtual reality have significantly enhanced how athletes train and perform.
The fusion of sports and technology is reshaping the industry. Advanced sensors now track physiological metrics, while smart equipment provides real-time feedback, making technology an essential part of an athlete's toolkit.
"Technology seamlessly integrates into the modern sports performance ecosystem, empowering young athletes and coaches by providing access to professional-level analysis and tools. This democratization helps nurture grassroots talent and fosters competitiveness," said Sudeep Kulkarni, founder and CEO of Game Theory.
The sports industry is increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize performance analysis and outcome prediction. Athletes can now practice against virtual opponents and simulate game scenarios using augmented reality (AR), enhancing their decision-making skills under pressure.
Stupa Sports Analytics, a sports tech firm based in Gurugram, recently supported the Indian table tennis team at a preparatory camp for the Paris Olympics. Their services included performance analytics, rally analysis, and AI insights for both players and coaches. "The data helped in strategizing against the world's best players, benefiting prominent athletes like Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai, Manav Thakker, Manika Batra, Archana Kamath, and Sreeja Akula," said Megha Gambhir, CEO and co-founder of Stupa Sports Analytics.
AR is also enhancing the spectator experience by providing fans with additional information about players and stats during live events. A report from the Capgemini Research Institute revealed that nearly 70% of surveyed respondents said emerging technologies have improved their overall viewing experience, both inside and outside the stadium.
Emerging technologies are undoubtedly the future of sports, with tech startups leading this golden era. The integration of technology in sports is reshaping how athletes train, compete, and engage with fans, driving innovation and setting new industry standards.
Mustafa Ghouse, founder and general partner at Centre Court Capital, a gaming and sports tech VC, noted that sports tech startups are becoming prime targets for venture capital due to their vast potential for innovation and growth. "In India, interest in sports technology is growing, particularly in niche areas. Over the past three years, India has seen USD 1.2 billion in sports tech investments, making it the third-largest funded country in this sector after the US and China," he said.
Indian sports tech startups are attracting attention from both global and domestic investors. "The increasing allocation of media rights and the surge in digital consumption of sports content are driving demand for advanced tech solutions. This, combined with the proliferation of smart devices and internet connectivity, creates a fertile ground for sports tech startups to thrive and attract substantial investment," Ghouse added.
