Bungie and Hasbro recently faced backlash for using a fan artist's work without permission in their new Nerf blaster, modeled after the iconic Ace of Spades from Destiny 2. Instead of creating the design from scratch, they replicated Tofu Rabbit's nine-year-old artwork.
In response, Bungie has committed to compensating and crediting Tofu Rabbit for their original design following a swift investigation. Despite some modifications by Bungie and Hasbro, the similarities to Tofu's fan art were undeniable, down to the brush strokes.
Tofu Rabbit shared that Bungie has been polite and encouraging in private messages, expressing hope for a quick resolution. This incident is not isolated, as Bungie has previously compensated other fan artists for similar issues.
The controversy extends beyond plagiarism. To purchase the $50 replica of Cayde’s Ace of Spades handcannon, players must achieve Legend status in the game, a process requiring significant effort. Bungie has acknowledged this and promised to address the grind required.
Despite the issues, the blaster is highly anticipated, featuring a six-shot revolver with two removable cylinders and battery-powered motors. It stands out as one of Hasbro's best licensed blasters, even surpassing their previous Overwatch revolver.
