Canon may not be finished with its 2024 lineup just yet. Following the recent launches of the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II in July, rumors are now circulating about a potential third full-frame mirrorless camera release this year: the EOS R6 Mark III.
According to Canon Rumors, the anticipated mid-range model with a full-frame sensor could debut by the end of 2024, accompanied by a list of expected features and specifications.
It's important to note that these details are based on speculation, but the timeline aligns with Canon's established two-year cycle for the EOS R6 series. The original EOS R6 was released in 2020, followed by the EOS R6 Mark II at the end of 2022. While a two-year product cycle for a camera at this level is relatively short, the recent release of Nikon's Z6 III, which outperforms the EOS R6 Mark II in many aspects, may push Canon to expedite the EOS R6 Mark III.
Canon Rumors suggests that the EOS R6 Mark III is "pretty much ready to go," and shares some expected specifications. The new camera is likely to feature a 24MP sensor similar to the stacked sensor in the high-end EOS R3, popular among professional sports and wildlife photographers.
While burst shooting speeds haven't been mentioned, we anticipate improvements if the stacked sensor rumor holds true, along with better management of rolling shutter distortion.
Nikon's Z6 III, which features a "partially" stacked sensor with a faster readout speed than the Canon EOS R6 II, sets a high bar. An even faster stacked sensor in the EOS R6 Mark III would be a strategic move for Canon to compete effectively.
