Summary

Amidst the AI advancements from Google, Microsoft, and Samsung, Apple is stepping up with its own suite of artificial intelligence features, dubbed Apple Intelligence. These enhancements are set to revolutionize Siri, making the digital assistant more intuitive and useful than ever.

Starting with the beta release of iOS 18 in September, Apple will roll out these AI upgrades for Siri, although some features may take up to a year to fully implement. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store.

Enhanced App Control With iOS 18, Siri gains deeper integration into the operating system. You can now rename documents in Pages, close tabs in Safari, enhance photos, and switch between front and rear cameras—all through Siri commands. Additionally, Siri's improved screen awareness allows for new interactions, such as adding an address to your contacts just by referencing it while viewing an address card.

Siri can also guide you through tasks on your device. For example, you can ask how to schedule a text message or switch to dark mode, and the instructions will appear at the top of the screen.

Improved Natural Language and Context Understanding Siri's language processing is getting a significant upgrade. The assistant will better understand you even if you stumble over words, and it will retain context from previous interactions. This means you can ask for a weather forecast and then set a reminder for a trip without repeating the location.

Siri will also personalize responses based on your data. For instance, asking about your mom’s flight will prompt Siri to pull information from your emails, texts, or the web. Commands like “show me all the photos of mom, Olivia, and me” will retrieve relevant images from your library.

Context-awareness extends to commands like “play the podcast my wife sent me yesterday” or “pull up the files James shared with me last week,” saving you time navigating through files and messages.

Typing with Siri and More For those moments when you need to be quiet, you can have text conversations with Siri via an Accessibility feature. With the new update, this feature is more accessible—just double-tap the navigation handle to bring up the type-to-Siri interface, where you can use the same commands as you would with your voice.

Siri will also connect with other Apple Intelligence features, such as generating AI images, creating custom emojis, or rewriting text in specific tones. These can be controlled via Siri or through interactions within apps.

Future Enhancements Additional upgrades are on the way, including voice control for compatible robot vacuum cleaners. These improvements, powered by Apple Intelligence models and tools, represent the most significant Siri upgrade yet, potentially transforming how you use your iPhone.
