In a striking trend, Google has increased the visibility of left-leaning news outlets in its search results, featuring nine times more articles from these sources compared to those with a neutral or right-leaning stance over a four-day span. This revelation follows a recent dismissal by the tech giant of a study from MRC Free Speech America that highlighted similar findings.
From September 30 to October 3, MRC researchers performed daily searches for “Donald Trump presidential race 2024” and “Kamala Harris presidential race 2024.” Each day, Google prioritized content from leftist U.S. and U.K. media, including major outlets like The Washington Post, CNN, and The Guardian, with 45 articles emerging from these sources versus just five from non-leftist outlets such as Fox News and NewsNation.
Brent Bozell, Founder and President of the Media Research Center (MRC), remarked, “Google owes an apology to the American public for its interference in election discourse, as it has been misleading with its search results.”
The report underscores a growing concern, especially as a November 2023 Pew Research survey indicates a rising trend of Americans seeking news through search engines, with 15% preferring this method, up from 13% in 2022.
Despite an increase in visibility for Trump's campaign site during the observed days, leftist media consistently overshadowed it in search rankings. For instance, while Trump's website climbed to the fifth position on the first day of the study and later to first on one occasion, Google still displayed an array of leftist articles above it.
In contrast, Kamala Harris’s website often faced less competition, sometimes appearing without any articles above it, while Trump’s consistently saw multiple leftist articles dominating search results. This consistent pattern further emphasizes Google’s apparent bias, especially following the MRC’s earlier study that revealed similar tendencies.
MRC Free Speech America has documented 21 additional studies revealing an ongoing leftist bias in Google’s search results, prompting calls for greater transparency and accountability from the tech giant. Moreover, Google’s AI chatbot has come under scrutiny for its vague responses regarding terrorist organizations, such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
The MRC urges the public to advocate for the accountability of big tech companies, demanding that they uphold First Amendment rights and ensure equitable representation for conservative viewpoints.
