The iPhone 15 series currently features a 12MP selfie camera across all models, but Apple might be planning a significant upgrade for the iPhone 17 series in 2025.
According to a research note obtained by MacRumors from Apple analyst Jeff Pu, all four models of the iPhone 17 will be equipped with a 24MP selfie camera. This new camera is expected to include six plastic lens elements.
While specific details such as sensor size and pixel dimensions are not yet available, this upgrade could offer several benefits. Many smartphones today provide selfie cameras with a wide field of view for group photos, while also allowing users to crop for more traditional selfies. A higher resolution camera would enhance the detail in these cropped images.
Additionally, a 24MP selfie camera could improve low-light photography through pixel binning, where a 24MP image is combined to create an 8MP photo with better light sensitivity.
Although this wouldn't be the highest resolution selfie camera on the market—some phones have featured 32MP, 40MP, and even 50MP front cameras—it represents a significant step up for Apple. Samsung, for instance, previously offered a 40MP selfie camera on its Ultra models but has since reverted to a 12MP lens with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. It will be interesting to see what resolution proves to be the optimal balance for selfie cameras.
