Meta is refining how it labels content edited or created with generative AI on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. According to an updated blog post, the "AI Info" tag will now be found within a menu in the top-right corner of AI-edited images and videos, rather than directly under the user's name.
Users can click on this menu to see if AI information is available and learn what modifications were made. Previously, Meta applied the "AI Info" tag to all AI-related content, whether it was slightly adjusted using tools like Photoshop or fully generated from a prompt.
The company states that these changes aim to "better reflect the extent of AI used" in images and videos across its platforms. This label was introduced in July after the previous "Made with AI" label faced criticism from creators and photographers for incorrectly tagging genuine photos. Meta clarified that the "AI Info" label will still be displayed for content detected as AI-generated, based on industry-shared signals or self-disclosure, with the changes rolling out next week.
The "industry-shared signals" mentioned by Meta include systems like Adobe's C2PA-supported Content Credentials metadata, which can be applied to any content created or edited using its Firefly generative AI tools. Other systems, such as Google's SynthID digital watermarks, are also used for AI-generated content. Meta has not disclosed which specific systems it checks for.
However, completely removing tags from real images that have been manipulated may make it harder for users to avoid being misled, especially as generative AI editing tools on new phones become more sophisticated.
