Singapore – In a significant move, Meta has announced its decision to discontinue its augmented reality (AR) platform, Meta Spark, by January 14, 2025. This announcement was revealed through a recent FAQ update by the tech giant.

As a result of this decision, third-party-created AR effects using Meta Spark will be removed from all Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Moreover, Meta Spark tools, including Meta Spark Studio, Meta Spark Hub, and Meta Spark Player, will no longer be accessible to users.

Despite this shutdown, Meta has assured that its first-party AR effects will continue to be available on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, ensuring that users can still enjoy the platform's in-house AR creations.

Meta stated, "After careful consideration, we have decided to reallocate our resources to other key priorities. Consequently, we are unable to support the Meta Spark platform in the long term."

The company advises AR creators and businesses who have published their effects on Meta platforms to download and save their project files, assets, and demo videos before the January 14, 2025 deadline. For those wishing to continue showcasing their AR effects, Meta suggests creating a portfolio on an external website.

"Meta remains committed to our long-term investments in emerging computing platforms that will move us beyond today's 2D mobile experiences. The shutdown of Meta Spark will enable us to focus on developing the next generation of experiences, including new form factors such as AR glasses," the company added.

Additionally, Meta has recommended that brands and agencies transition to third-party AR platforms by the end of 2024 or early 2025 if they wish to continue creating AR-based experiences.
