Nvidia's RTX 3060, once a top-tier graphics card, is set to be discontinued after a three-year run. According to a post on the Chinese tech forum Bobantang (also known as Board Channels), Nvidia plans to cease production of the RTX 3060, which has been a favorite among gamers since its release in February 2021.
The card has maintained its position as the most popular GPU in the Steam Hardware Survey.
The Bobantang forum admin, citing "accurate information," claims that Nvidia has informed its add-in card partners to place their final orders for the RTX 3060. Following Nvidia's standard operating procedure, the last batches of the RTX 3060 will be sent to partners over the next few months.
While the rumor remains unconfirmed, the forum has a history of accurate predictions, including the discontinuation of the RTX 3060 Ti in May 2023. If true, the RTX 3060 will gradually disappear from store shelves as vendors receive their final shipments.
As of the July 2024 Steam Hardware Survey, the RTX 3060 holds a 5.71% market share, making it the most popular GPU among all surveyed devices. This impressive run is attributed to its affordability and performance, especially after the initial price surge during the crypto-mining boom. Both the original 12GB and later 8GB versions of the RTX 3060 became consumer favorites, thanks to VRAM speed enhancements.
For those considering a new GPU, we recommend opting for the RTX 4060, which offers better performance and newer features at a similar price point.
Although the RTX 3060 has been surpassed, its discontinuation marks the end of an era for a beloved GPU.
