Summary

Apple is rumored to finally upgrade the iPhone's selfie camera with the iPhone 17, introducing a 24MP sensor after five years of using a 12MP sensor.

Apple has not updated the iPhone's selfie camera since introducing the 12MP sensor with the iPhone 11. Since then, improvements have been limited to software enhancements like the Photonic Engine and Smart HDR updates. However, according to Haitong Securities analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17, expected in 2025, will feature a 24MP sensor with six plastic lens elements.

Currently, the iPhone 15 lineup includes a 12MP front camera with five plastic lens elements. The upcoming iPhone 16 is anticipated to have six plastic lens elements, but the significant jump to a 24MP sensor will only come with the iPhone 17. This upgrade marks a substantial improvement in selfie quality, despite Apple's stance that megapixels are not the most crucial camera feature.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicted that at least one iPhone 17 model would include a 24MP selfie camera with a six-piece lens. It now appears that all iPhone 17 models will receive this upgrade. Jeff Pu also forecasts other specifications for the 2025 iPhone lineup, including four different display sizes: 6.1-inch, 6.3-inch, 6.6-inch, and 6.9-inch.

Apple is expected to introduce the A19 chip for the new phones, differentiating between regular and Pro models. The regular models will likely have 8GB of RAM, while the Pro versions will feature 12GB. Additionally, only the Pro models will have three main 48MP cameras. The regular iPhone 17 will have 48MP and 12MP sensors, and the rumored iPhone 17 Slim might come with a single 48MP main camera.
