In a recent announcement, Target has revealed that it will no longer accept personal checks as a form of payment starting July 15. This decision comes as a result of the declining number of customers using this payment method.
"Due to extremely low volumes, we’ll no longer accept personal checks starting July 15,” a Target representative stated in a release shared with Nexstar. “We have taken several measures to notify guests in advance to aid an easy and efficient checkout experience.”
This trend is not unique to Target. According to the Federal Reserve, the number of personal checks written has been steadily declining over the years. In 2021, only around 12 billion checks were written, a significant drop from 20.2 billion in 2015.
Despite this change, Target continues to offer a variety of payment options to ensure a smooth and convenient shopping experience. The spokesperson highlighted that the retailer accepts several payment methods, including the newly rebranded Target Circle Cards (previously known as Target RedCard), cash, digital wallets, SNAP/EBT, buy now pay later services, and credit and debit cards.
As of now, Target's website still lists personal checks as an accepted form of payment for in-store purchases. However, after July 15, customers will need to use one of the other available payment options.
The company also clarified that certain forms of payment are generally not accepted, such as foreign checks, foreign currency, mall gift cards, “chamber bucks” (certificates issued by local chambers of commerce), money orders, cashier’s checks, business checks, and any merchant gift cards that aren’t Target gift cards or Starbucks gift cards (for use at Starbucks locations within Target stores).
