Tesla's innovative all-electric "Giga Train" has officially commenced operations, providing a sustainable transportation solution for employees commuting to Gigafactory Berlin. The train, which began its first journey earlier this week, is designed to address potential commuting concerns for Tesla's workforce.
The Giga Train will eventually transport up to 4,500 employees daily to the factory, where they will contribute to the production of Tesla's electric vehicles. The service, which is free for all passengers, connects Tesla Süd station with Erkner station.
Initially scheduled to launch in April, the Giga Train began operations on Wednesday. This marks the debut of the first fully electric, battery-powered train in Berlin and Brandenburg. Each carriage accommodates 120 seats, with a total capacity of 500 passengers per trip. The train also features bicycle compartments, ground-level access, and an information system for passenger convenience.
Theresa Eggler, a project manager at Tesla, expressed her excitement to rbb24, a German media outlet: "We are particularly pleased that the Tesla train shuttle is now battery-electric because it aligns perfectly with our mission to accelerate the transition to renewable energies."
The train is operated by Niederbarnimer Eisenbahngesellschaft (NEB), which plans to transition to an electric fleet by the end of the year. NEB's managing director, Sebastian Achtermann, stated: "We will introduce 31 battery-electric multiple units and seven hydrogen multiple units, gradually replacing our current diesel fleet."
Although the train was initially set to start on Monday, other construction projects caused a slight delay. For now, the shuttle will run between the Gigafactory and Erkner, with plans to add a stop at Berlin-Lichtenberg once construction is complete.
