As the 2024 presidential election approaches, AI startups are intensifying their lobbying activities, aiming to influence the future leader's stance on AI-related issues. The number of groups lobbying the U.S. federal government on AI matters has surged from 459 in 2023 to 556 in the first half of 2024, according to OpenSecrets data.
This increase, recorded from January to July, suggests that the number of lobbying groups could rise even further. Prominent AI startups are focusing on enhancing their lobbying initiatives.
OpenAI and Anthropic Boost Lobbying Expenditures
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has significantly ramped up its lobbying spending, allocating $800,000 in the first six months of 2024, compared to $260,000 for the entire year of 2023. This increase is accompanied by a growth in their lobbying team, from three consultants last year to 14 in the first half of this year.
Similarly, Anthropic is expected to spend $500,000 on lobbying in the coming months. Having spent $280,000 last year, they have already allocated $250,000 in 2024 and expanded their lobbying team from three to five.
AI Regulation and the Future of the Industry
The surge in lobbying efforts comes amid ongoing debates about AI regulation in the United States. Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden support federal oversight of AI, emphasizing the need for protections that do not hinder innovation. At a global AI summit in London last year, Harris highlighted the urgency of implementing safeguards.
On the other hand, Donald Trump has expressed that Republicans favor AI development that promotes free speech and human flourishing.
