SandboxAQ has secured additional funding from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) to further develop its AQNav magnetic navigation system. This Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) as part of the SBIR Phase 2B program will enable SandboxAQ and its partner, AFWERX, to create new configurations of AQNav, including a pod-based version. These enhancements will allow for deployment across a wider array of aircraft, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
AQNav is an advanced navigation system that utilizes quantum sensors combined with proprietary AI-driven Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) to offer a reliable alternative to traditional GPS. The system harnesses data from the Earth’s crustal magnetic field, providing precise, real-time navigation even in challenging weather conditions, without the need for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). This passive, non-emitting technology increases aircraft stealth and can be integrated into a variety of platforms, ranging from small single-engine planes to large military transport aircraft.
This recent funding extension builds on a previous Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR contract awarded to SandboxAQ in January 2023. AQNav has already undergone extensive testing, with over 40 sorties and 200 flight hours completed. The system has proven its capabilities in key USAF exercises, such as Exercise Golden Phoenix and Exercise Mobility Guardian, showcasing its effectiveness and reliability. The USAF's decision to extend the contract underscores their confidence in AQNav’s ability to contribute to maintaining tactical air superiority.
For further details, SandboxAQ has published a press release on their website, and more information about AQNav can be found on their product page and in a blog post detailing their collaboration with the U.S. Air Force.
