Severe weather events like hurricanes, tropical storms, and thunderstorms can lead to power outages, disrupting your home Wi-Fi. However, there are ways to stay connected to the internet even when the power is out.
Preparation Tips:
• Charge all electronics and portable chargers in advance.
• Unplug unnecessary appliances to prevent damage from electrical surges.
• Report outages to your power company.
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
• Have flashlights ready for use.
Verizon Customers:
Verizon offers several options to stay online during power outages:
• Hotspot Devices: Battery-powered devices like the Orbic Speed Mobile Hotspot can keep you connected as long as the cell network is operational. Verizon ensures connectivity with generators and backup batteries at cell sites.
• Phone Hotspots: Use your phone's hotspot feature to connect laptops and tablets.
• Cellular Devices: Phones, laptops, and tablets with cellular connections will have internet access if Verizon's cell sites are functioning.
AT&T Customers:
AT&T prepares its network for storms by:
• Testing backup batteries and distributing portable generators.
• Fueling generators at cell sites.
• Deploying generators post-storm.
AT&T's unlimited plans include hotspot data, with additional data available for purchase if needed.
Spectrum Customers:
Spectrum teams work with power companies to restore connectivity quickly. Spectrum's mobile plans include hotspot data, but speeds may reduce after reaching data limits.
T-Mobile Customers:
T-Mobile enhances its network with backup power solutions and disaster response vehicles. T-Mobile's plans offer high-speed mobile hotspot data, with options to add more data if needed.
• Streaming: Uses the most data, especially high-resolution videos.
• Web Browsing: Uses less data than streaming but more than texting or calling.
• Texting and Calling: Requires minimal data, though video calls use more.
Connecting to Wi-Fi whenever possible helps save data.
